ROADS OF LOVE es un disco cocinado poco a poco, a fuego lento. Tras la gira de presentación de su álbum "Bikiny Groove", The Starlites se marcaron el reto de ir haciendo los nuevos temas con más perspectiva y tiempo. Sin prisas. El resultado de este planteamiento fue espectacular: un disco de reggae moderno en el que son capaces de capturar un inmenso tropel de sensaciones. The Starlites alcanzan en “Roads of Love” su plena madurez como banda.

Es un álbum repleto de guiños a clásicos de la música negra, de pequeños homenajes en forma de canción original de The Starlites. Curtis Mayfield, Maytals, Uniques, por citar solamente algunos nombres, van cruzándose en el camino compositivo de la pareja Ezequiel-Tximbo de la misma manera en que el soul y el groove se topan con el rocksteady y el ska. O Phil Spector con Sir Coxson y el Soul Train con el Rocksteady Train. Influencias que siempre han estado presentes pero que no siempre era posible incorporar de esta manera al sonido real del grupo. Para rematarlo todo, la banda ha contado con violines, violas, percusiones, coros… a cargo de sus amigos. Las canciones simplemente pedían ser completadas instrumentalmente y el resultado es magnífico. La incorporación a la formación de Eduardo Sánchez al piano, órgano Hammond y coros y de Ion Celestino a la trompeta aporta nuevos ricos matices. Y además... la inestimable ayuda de Roberto Sánchez (aka Lone Ark) en la producción hace que el más pequeño detalle esté cuidado al máximo.

Por su temática es un disco casi conceptual. Trata sobre los distintos caminos que toma el amor y por lo tanto de todos los sentimientos que van acompañados: desengaño, frustración, felicidad, soledad... Esos sentimientos son los que sirven de argumento para que la banda desarrolle todo su potencial melódico y rítmico. Únicamente una recomendación: no pongas el volumen demasiado bajo, te perderías muchas cosas.

ROADS OF LOVE is a slowly stew album. After heavily touring presenting their album “Bikini Groovy” the band assumed the challenge of creating new songs with more time and perspective. Without hurries. The outcome of this scheme was spectacular: an album of modern reggae in which the band was able to capture a huge heap of sensations. The Starlites reach full maturity as a band with “Roads Of Love”.

It is a record crammed with references to the classics of black music, with wonderful small tributes in the shape of Starlites original songs. Curtis Mayfield, Maytals, Uniques, just to name a few, cross the path of composer duet Ezequiel-Tximo. And with that same feeling soul and groove meet rocksteady and ska. And Phil Spector gets together with Sir Coxon and Soul Train joins the Rocksteady Train. The influences were always there but it was not always possible to integrate them in the real sound of the band. And to finish it off the record counts with violins, violas, percussion, backing vocals… in charge of a bunch of good friends. The songs of the album simply demanded being instrumentally completed and the result is brilliant. The inclusion in the line-up of Eduardo Sanchez at piano, Hammond organ and backing-vocals and Ion Celestino at the trumpet provides new rich tones. The recording also counted with the invaluable help of Roberto Sanchez (aka Lone Ark) in the production and taking care to the limit of the slightest detail.

Due to its thematic it can almost be considered as a concept album. It is about love and the different roads it takes and about the feelings that love causes: disappointment, frustration, happiness, loneliness… These feelings form the plot that allows the band to efficiently deliver all of its melodic and rhythmical potential. Only one piece of advice: turn up the volume or you will be missing a lot of things.

Después de presentar en la carretera su primer disco y ante la insistencia de Brixton Records, The Starlites vuelven al estudio (Two-Bascos Studios, Bilbao) para grabar el que sería su primer larga duración: "Bikini Groovy". Este disco les dará el reconocimiento que merecen en el circuito internacional y será una primera piedra de toque para que la banda comience a despegar como banda puntera dentro del ska y rocksteady moderno. Este disco les llevará por ejemplo, a ser nº 1 en el apartado de mejores discos del 2002 de la prestigiosa revista francesa Ragga Magazine que lo define como “un clásico moderno” o a crear gran expectación en el mercado japonés. Cada vez con más fans e incondicionales, The Starlites se embarcan en giras cada vez mas prestigiosas y a colaborar en discos recopilatorios por todo el mundo con un repertorio en el que mezclan su famosa manera de entender el rocksteady junto con composiciones mas en onda funky-reggae e incluso soul.

"Bikini Groovy" es un sueño hecho realidad, una realidad dura como el suelo que pisamos pero no por ello triste y pesimista, todo lo contrario. Este disco es puro positivismo. Cuantas veces hemos deseado poder escuchar algo nuevo que de verdad tenga "espíritu", que no sea artificial ni superficial. Cuando se pasa por alto un disco como este es cuando de verdad se comprueba lo arbitrario del "show-business". Pequeñas (grandes) bandas con ideas y conciencia, como The Starlites, continúan caminando por el duro asfalto de la independencia esperando a que llegue el reconocimiento que tanto merecen.

“Bikini Groovy” incluye reivindicación de los origenes (“1969”), homenaje a los miticos Melodians (“Swing & Dime”) además de rocksteady, boggie ska, swing, rhythm & blues, reggae y, jazz Voces perfectas y toneladas de MUSICA de estos 8 músicos enamorados del sonido jamaicano. Como invitado especial Coolie Ranks.

After presenting on the road their first record and due to the insistence of Brixton records, The Starlites go back to into the studio(Two-Bascos Studios, Bilbao) to record what would then be their first complete album: “Bikini Groovy”. This disk received a big up from all the major reggae international media and would be a stepping’ stone for the band to take off as a first division band among the ones in modern ska and rocksteady. For example French specialized magazine Ragga Magazine rated it as “a modern classic” and was number 1 in the best records of 2002. In Japan the CD also raised great expectations. This enabled The Starlites to take part in more prestigious festivals and tours playing and presenting the album all over Europe and including songs in compilations for several European labels. Thir repertoire with mixing their own way of understanding rocksteady with a noothe groove of funky-reggae and even soul.
“Bikini Groovy” is in a way a dream made real. A reality as hard as the concrete we step on but that doesn’t mean it is sad and pessimist. On the contrary the album is sheer positivism. How many toime have we wished something nes something with “soul”,. Not artificial, nor superficial. When a record like this one is overlooked is when we are able to check how arbitrary show-business is. Small (big) bands with ideas and attitude , as the Starlites, keep on walking on hard concrte of independency waiting for recognition they truly deserve.

“Bikiny Groove” includes claim of origin (“1969”), homage of the mythical Melodians (“Swing & Dime”), as well as large dosis of rocksteady, boggie ska, swing, rhythm & blues, reggae and jazz. Great voices and tons of MUSIC from 8 mucisians in love with the Jamaican grooves. As special guest: Coolie Ranks.

Segundo sampler producido por Brixton Records que es a la vez un pequeña degustación de lo que haciamos en 2003. Centrado básicamente en ska y rocksteady, en este álbum nos abrimos también a roots rockers dub reggae. La portada (al igual que Brixton Cats & the Rudies) está inspirada en el famoso álbum de mediados de los 60 "Brixton Cat" y la música es el resultado de mezclar una nueva generación de músicos de reggae con las vibraciones old school.

Ska-jazz tradicional afro-jamaicano con el gran David Hillard & the Rocksteady 7 desde Nueva York; early reggae con Proyecto Secreto desde Bélgica; rocksteady con The Starlites y The Slackers; boogaloo-ska con La Thorpe Brass desde Catalunya; Ambassah meets Dub Generation proyecto dirigido por "Dubby" con infinidad de colaboraciones y el latido de uno de los percusionistas más inquietos dentro de la escena Roots; ska-soul con Akatz desde Bilbao; root-rockers como BDF-Basque Dub Foundation, directos a sus raices y con un toque 70`s; Load & Lone la encarnación de Roberto Sanchez y Borja Juanco desde su estudio A-Lone.

Una selección de bandas haciendo diversos estilos jamaicanos pero con algo en común: cada una de las bandas respeta y ama el reggae.

Focused basically in old school ska and rocksteady this album also opens to the roots rockers dub reggae The cover (as happened in Brixton Cats & the Rudies) is inspired by the famous "Brixton Cat" album from the mid 60’s and the music is the result of mixing a new generation of reggae musicians with the old school vibrations.

El primer disco recopilatorio editado por Brixton Records y una pequeña degustación de lo que hacíamos en nuestros inicios. Centrado básicamente en ska y rocksteady de la vieja escuela, este cd es, en cierta manera, el germen de lo que Brixton Records es hoy. La portada del disco está inspirada por el famoso disco “Brixton Cat” de mediados de los 60 y la música es el resultado de mezclar a una nueva generación de músicos con las vibraciones de la vieja escuela. No importa de donde vengas, no importa si eres blanco o negro (hay mezcla de culturas en cada una de las bandas) y no importa si haces ska, rocksteady o roots; si respetas tul pasado, tu futuro estará mucho más claro.

Dos canciones por banda y seis bandas en total : THE STARLITES, TTAK! (desde Donostia haciendo roots reggae de primera calidad y con muchos conciertos a sus espaldas – RIP), PROYECTO SECRETO, THE PEEPING TOMS, AKATZ y THE CYPRINIDIANS (joven banda de Bermeo que sufrió en sus propias carnes la Ley de Extranjería – RIP).

No matter where you come from, no matter if you’re white or black (there’s mix of cultures in each and every band) and no matter if you do ska , rocksteady or roots; if you respect your past, your future will come up more clearly.

Two tracks for each of the six bands: THE STARLITES, TTAK! (from San Sebastian doing first-class roots reggae and with long experience in the road – RIP), PROYECTO SECRETO, THE PEEPING TOMS, AKATZ and THE CYPRINIDIANS (young band from Bermeo that suffered in first person the Inmigration Laws – RIP).

THE STARLITES - Rock Steady Explosion [1999]

Siempre hay un principio y este fue el nuestro: un maxi-cd con las fantásticas armonías y voces de la mejor banda de Rocksteady.

The Starlites se forman en el año 1996 con la mayoría de los miembros originales de la mítica banda Banana Boats. Primero como Los Fabulosos Dolbys y finalmente como The Starlites, se proponen revitalizar los sonidos de la era dorada de la música jamaicana, los sonidos que funden el soul con el ska jamaicano: el rocksteady.

Tras incluir el tema “Gorabidean” en el disco recopilatorio de “Araba Euskaraz” el combo vasco-riojano, liderado a nivel compositivo por Ezequiel García (ex-Dr Calypso, ex-Banana Boats), se metió al estudio para grabar lo que sería su primer disco. Un maxi-cd de 4 canciones en el que muestran claramente cuales son sus intenciones e influencias y en el que ponen todos los medios para reproducir ese sonido que tanto aman: cadenciosas melodías que acarician tus oídos. El disco incluye 3 temas propios ("I need you", "Dance rocksteady", "People get ready") y una versión de un tema del grandioso D. Penn ("Close to me").

The Starlites deciden publicar el disco a través de una tienda especializada en ska-reggae llamada "Brixton Denda" lo que supuso también el comienzo de Brixton Records como discográfica. El disco logra gran reconocimiento dentro el circuito especializado del reggae y además muy buenas ventas, así que la relación entre banda, seguidores y discográfica se hizo tremendamente fuerte. The Starlites entonces deciden comenzar a actuar en salas y festivales preparándose para grabar un LP en condiciones. Continuará…


There is always a first time, and this record was ours: a maxi-cd with the fantastic vocal harmonies of the best Rocksteady band.

The Starlites started as a band in 1996 with most of the musicians from the defunct popular ska band Banana Boats. Their intention was to recreate the sounds of the golden era of Jamaican music, the time when soul and ska merged creating Rocksteady.

Leaded by guitar player and composer Ezequiel Garcia (ex-Doctor Calypso, ex-Banana Boats) the band went into the studio to capture what would then be their first record, a maxi-cd including their earliest own penned songs ("I need you", "Dance rocksteady", "People get ready") plus a cover of the marvelous D. Penn ("Close to me").

They decided to release it through a small ska-reggae store called "Brixton Denda" and that was also the beginning of "Brixton Records" as a record company. The reviews and sales of the maxi-cd where fantastic at a time when Jamaican music was only available in underground circles and most of it was “2-Tone” only. So the relationship between band, their followers and the record company became very tight so they and decided to start playing in venues, festivals and getting ready to a proper LP.
