Primer showcase del álbum JAZZIN’ REGGAE incluyendo versiones dub de cada uno de los temas además de algunas gratas sorpresas como las voces de Derrick Morgan y Ras Marcus.

Grabado en el estudio del propio Alberto Tarin en el año 2001 y mezclado en los Xuquer Estudis de Valencia, Jazzin’ Reggae es una reunión de músicos españoles relacionados con el jazz y el reggae tocando con el gran guitarrista Alberto Tarin. El disco está producido por el propio AT y Sergio Monleon (Jah Macetas) en un estilo orientado al dub aunque ofrece diferentes ambientes a través de formaciones que van desde el trío instrumental hasta una banda completa de reggae.

Auque jazz y reggae han convivido desde los años 60 (como queda probado en algunos trabajos de fusión en los 70 y 80) no se pueden encontrar muchos ejemplos de acercamiento entre ambos estilos desde los años 90 hasta hoy en día ,en los que el acento se ponga en el riddim reggae. Solamente los grandes maestros Ernest Ranglin y Monty Alexander han mantenido esa comunicación entre jazz y regaae durante los últimos años 90. ¡Y este trabajo fue grabado en 2001!

Jazzin’ Reggae es un tributo a grandes músicos como Jackie Mitoo, G. Gershwin, Cole Porter, Leroy Sibbles, Henry Mancini. . . a través del espléndido estilo guitarristico de Alberto Tarin que siempre consigue que la musica sea tremendamente fácil de escuchar.

First showcase of the album JAZZIN’ REGGAE including dub versions of each and every song plus some nice surprises like wonderful vocals from Derrick Morgan and Ras Marcus.

Recorded at Alberto Tarin’s home studio in 2001 and mixed at Xuquer Studios in Valencia (Spain), Jazzin’ Reggae is a musical reunion of Spanish musicians linked with jazz and reggae jamming with great guitar player Alberto Tarin. Produced by AT himself and Sergio Monleon (Jah Macetas) in a dub oriented style, the disc provides different atmospheres through tracks which go from a musical trio to a complete reggae band.


Although jazz and reggae live together since 1960 -proved by some fusion works during the 70’s and the 80’s- we can’t find many examples of the approach between both styles during the 90’s until today, specially those in which the main weight is put into the reggae riddim. Only the great masters Ernest Ranglin and Monty Alexander have kept the communication between jazz and reggae during the last 90’s. So this work coming from year 2001 brings the music still blazing.


Alberto Tarin's Jazzin Reggae is a tribute to great musics like Jackie Mitoo, G. Gershwin, Cole Porter, Leroy Sibbles, Henry Mancini,. . . and Alberto Tarin’s fine guitar style that makes music very easy for the listener.

LA THORPE BRASS – All Things Move [2001]

LA THORPE BRASS comenzó como grupo en Tarragona en 1993 con el no fácil propósito de crear una big-band que hiciera sonidos latinos y soul pero teniendo el ska como riddim primordial. Tras grabar unas cuantas maquetas y ofrecer cientos de conciertos por toda la península lograron labrarse una gran reputación y recibieron criticas especialmente favorables de prensa, radio y medios especializados del reggae. La banda entró en el estudio para capturar sus primeros 4 temas para un maxi-cd, Today Is Hot (1998).

Las continuas actuaciones continuaron trayendo nuevas composiciones que su ya amplia base de seguidores crónicamente les pedía grabaran. Así que a finales del año 2000 La Thorpe Brass volvió al estudio para grabar su primer larga duración: All Things Move (originalmente editado por Tony Trash y enseguida adquirido por Brixton Records). La publicación del disco cayó como una bomba y una vez más les trajo toneladas de conciertos así como una gira europea.

ALL THINGS MOVE es un gran testimonio de uno de los combos de ska-boogaloo-soul más locos que ha existido nunca. Una orquesta completa con una sección de viento asombrosa, profundos grooves de Hammond, congas latinas, melodías jazzy y voces soulful. Sus influencias latinas mezcladas con jazz y reggae así como las extraordinarias y complejas composiciones de su front-man Pele Viader y la intensa ejecución de las piezas durante la grabación hacen que este sea un álbum no comparable con otros realizados por las habituales bandas de Latin-ska. Las letras también son un componente muy importante incluyendo la critica social de "The Dead Men Walking" y "El Boogaloo Egoista" o tributos frikis a “John Wayne" o "Ji Jaga" solo por mencionar algunos temas. Para todos los fans de la música negra All Things Move es un divertido e interesante tesoro que descubrir y para aquellos que tuvieron la oportunidad de experimentar a La Thorpe Brass en directo, es un recordatorio del sonido de una de las mejores bandas de Latin-ska que han existido.

Había planes para grabar un segundo álbum en Cuba pero debido a ciertos desacuerdos internos la banda decidió disolverse en el año 2004.

The story of LA THORPE BRASS starts in Tarragona (Catalonia) in 1993 when a bunch of restless musicians meet with the purpose of creating a big band doing Latin-soul music but having Ska as main riddim. After recording a few demos and doing a lot of gigs all over Spain the band shaped quite a big reputation and received especially good reviews from press, radios and specialized reggae media. So the band went into the studio to capture their first 4 songs in a maxi-cd, Today Is Hot (1998). 
 
Hundreds of gigs followed and new songs were coming through and due to the continuous requests from their large following La Thorpe Brass soon decided to return to the studio to record their first full album ALL THINGS MOVE (originally released by Tony Trash but soon acquired by Brixton Records). The release of the record produced a big blast and the band went up doing tons of gigs and touring Europe.
 
All Things Move is a great testimony of one of the craziest ska-boogaloo-soul bands ever. A whole orchestra with incredible horn section, deep Hammond grooves , Latin congas, jazzy melodies and soulful voice. Their Latin influences mixed with jazz and reggae, the great and complex compositions from their front man Pele Viader and the intense execution in the studio while recording makes this album to be a lot different and far better than the usual Latin-ska recordings. Lyrics are also of major importance with social criticism in "The Dead Men Walking" and "El Boogaloo Egoista" or freaky tributes to "John Wayne"or to "Ji Jaga" just to mention a few tracks. For all black music followers All Things Move is an amusing treasure to discover and for those who had the opportunity to see them live this is a reminder of the sound of one of the best Latin-ska bands ever, and we mean worldwide.

There were plans to record a second album in Cuba but due to inner discrepancies the band made a decision to split in 2004.

AKATZ - 12 Años de Éxitos [2004]

Akatz se formó a finales de 1992 en la localidad costera de Bakio, por cinco amigos dispuestos a rellenar el tiempo de aburrimiento que les ofrecían los duros inviernos de la Euskadi Tropical. Desde el principio la banda quiso defender un repertorio propio así como lograr un sonido particular, todo ello, para poder experimentarlo en directo.

Como toda banda de tantas personas (entre 9 y 12 desde 1995), Akatz vive continuos cambios de formación, siendo el conjunto de pioneros fundadores los que mantienen viva la llama del caribe a las que con el paso del tiempo y las influencias se han ido añadiendo reflejos de otras latitudes y culturas (r’n’b, jazz, swing, latin, brazil...). Entre los años 1992 y 2004 ofrecen más de 100 conciertos, actuando en los mas diversos lugares; desde bares, salas de conciertos, discotecas, festivales al aire libre, fiestas municipales, concursos, videos musicales... Y editan cds autoproducidos: "Ez zaitez gera dantza gabe". (maqueta grabada en 1994 con 8 temas propios en euskera, castellano, inglés e instrumentales); "One car" (maqueta grabada en 1996 con 7 nuevos temas en euskera, castellano, inglés e instrumentales); "Akatz" (mini-cd autoeditado grabado en 1998 con 4 temas nuevos); "Particular Costa" (cd-promocional grabado en el 2000 con 7 temas en el que por primera vez introducen 2 versiones). Además toman parte en varios recopilatorios: "Brixton Cats + the Rudies" (2 temas); "Global ska 2"; "Brixton Cats + the Reggaeboys"; "Spanish Town Reggae".

Toda esta experiencia sirve para el lanzamiento al mercado de "12 Años de Éxitos" el primer larga duración de Akatz, en el que la banda se pone de largo contando con la colaboración de invitados como: Freddie Reiter de NYSJE, Roberto Sanchez, Myriam Quiñones, Alain Michel,...

Akatz started as a reggae band in 1992 in Bakio (coast area of the Bay of Bizkaia) when some friends decided to get together to scape from the cold winters of Basque Country. The idea was to find their own personal style in reggae and to be able to defend their own songs live.

As a big-band their set line always consists of 8 to 12 members. Therefore counting with a lot of different musicians that during this period frequently come and go. This is the reason why there is a large Akatz family all over the area and some of the best Basque musicians have played in the band as established part of the team.

After so long the band still remembers hundreds of concerts in bars, pubs, clubs, open air festivals… and also tons of friends that makes it a very experienced combo. During the period that goes from 1992 to 2004 the band also self-publishes cd-demos and participates in several sampler records as: "Brixton Cats + the Rudies" (2 tracks); "Global ska 2"; "Brixton Cats + the Reggaeboys"; "Spanish Town Reggae".

All this experience and their own personal way of playing ska, rocksteady and roots reggae took them to releasing their first official album entitled "12 Años de Éxitos" ("twelve years of hits") as a compilation of their top level tracks. The special appearances of great musicians make this album a outstanding work of their capabilities: Fred Rocksteady Reyter from NYSJE, Miriam Quiñones as vocalist in the incredible "Razon de vivir", Alain Michel, Roberto Sanchez.....
