ALTON ELLIS in memoriam

No nos es posible dejar que se acabe el año sin tener un pequeño recuerdo para Mr. Rocksteady, Mr. Soul of Jamaica... ¡Mr. Alton Ellis! quien desgraciadamente falleció el pasado 11 de octubre de 2008.

Alton Ellis visitó Euskadi en varias ocasiones, la última en agosto de 2007 como cabeza de cartel del Festival de Ska-Reggae que anualmente se celebra en el barrio de Romo de Getxo (Bizkaia). Tras un trepidante concierto en el que repasó su larga carrera apoyado por The Ranking Soldiers como "backing band" y su hijo Chris a la segunda voz, no dudo ni un momento en atender a los fans que a él se acercaron en busca de un autógrafo, una foto o para compartir los aromas locales. Un autentico caballero en el vestir y en el trato a quien el público (entre el que se encontraban músicos de The Starlites y The Pepper Pots por ejemplo) agradeció sinceramente la humildad y entrega de una autentica leyenda. El mejor tributo posible es escuchar la música que en más de 40 años de carrera nos ha ofrecido de acuerdo con su máxima "True to myself" (fiel a mi mismo).

We can’t let the year run out without mentioning Mr. Rocksteady, Mr. Soul of Jamaica... Mr. Alton Ellis! who unfortunately passed away last 11th October 2008.

Alton Ellis visited the Basque Country several times, the last one in August 2007 as feature act of the Ska-Reggae Festival that takes place in the district of Romo in Getxo (Bizkaia) every year. After a frenetic gig in which he reviewed his long and outstanding career -with The Ranking Soldiers as backing band and his son Chris helping on vocals- he didn’t hesitate a second to share time with all the fans that went up to him for autographs, photos or just to share the local flavours. A real gentleman in the way he dressed and the way he treated everybody . The audience –musicians of the The Starlites and The Pepper Pots among it- was sincerely grateful for the humbleness and devotion of a real legend. The best possible tribute to Alton Ellis is listening to the music that he created in a period of over 40 and that he offered according to his quote: “True to myself”.

”Strictly live!” es el primer disco en directo de Mr. T-Bone, y esta grabado íntegramente durante su primera gira europea (2005), tras publicar su disco“Mr. T-Bone sees America” (BR014). Cada minuto de su extensa gira quedo registrado y fue posteriormente analizado con detenimiento hasta seleccionar los mejores momentos y de esta manera crear este disco.

Nos encontramos con un álbum que no ha sido retocado posteriormente, no hay trampa de estudio, son ellos y su publico en contacto directo, la esencia de su particular visión de la música jamaicana. Directo a los sentimientos y al ritmo calido, es interpretado con gusto y entusiasmo por su banda de “Allstars” (formada por muchos de los mejores músicos de reggae tanto de Italia como de USA) y mientras “Gigi de Gaspari aka Mr T-Bone” nos deleita con sus solos de trombón y sus detalles vocales en ese ingles italianizado que nos remonta a los años 30 de Chicago y a sus bandas de swing y gángsteres .

Paris, Madrid, Rótterdam, Groningem, St. Gallen, son los sitios elegidos para representar el directo de Mr. T-Bone, pero podrían haber sido otras muchas ciudades europeas ya que su música recorre regularmente los circuitos de ska y reggae de gran cantidad de países tanto del este como del oeste de Europa.

Con este disco Mr T-Bone nos invita a conocerle de una manera muy especial, en su hábitat natural, con sangre, sudor, lagrimas y desde luego “Strictly live!”

”Strictly live!” is the first live album by Mr. T-Bone, entirely recorded during his first European tour (2005) following the successful release of his album “Mr. T-Bone sees America” (BR-014). Each minute of the lengthy tour was registered and afterwards analyzed in detail to select the best moments creating this album.

No over dubs were added, no studio tricks. It is just the band and the audience in direct interaction. The essence of Mr. T-Bone's own vision of Jamaican music. Straight emotions and hot rhythms performed with class and enthusiasm by an "All-stars" band consisting of the best reggae musicians from Italy and USA. And in particular “Gigi de Gaspari aka Mr T-Bone” delighting us with trombone solos and vocal details of his peculiar Italian English that brings us back to Chicago in the thirties, the swing bands and gangsters in film.

Paris, Madrid, Rotterdam, Groningen, St. Gallen are the selected places for presenting Mr. T-Bone's live set but could had been any other European town since Mr. T-Bone’s live music regularly travels around the European ska-reggae circuit.

With this album Mr. T-Bone invites us to discover him in his natural environment, with blood sweat and tears, “Strictly live!”

ROOT DIAMOONS - With Other Eyes [2008]

Aquellos chavales que allá por 2001 y con más ilusión que pericia con sus respectivos instrumentos, se ponían en marcha bajo el nombre de Short Skankers en la barriada barcelonesa de Horta-Guinardó, hoy se denominan Root Diamoons. Son un proyecto premiado, rodado y consolidado que recoge la herencia del ska tradicional, el rocksteady y el ska jazz genuino de los genios jamaicanos de los sesenta, léase Jackie Opel, The Skatalites o Justin Hinds & The Dominoes, con la misma querencia que lo hacen por los revivalistas americanos de los noventa, del calibre de Hepcat, The Articles, Jump With Joey o The Slackers.

La elegancia se tiene o no se tiene. No basta con presumir vistiendo trajes recién adquiridos de Giorgio Armani o Adolfo Domínguez o con emular en un intento vano a los pioneros. El estilo con mayúsculas no se imposta, se adquiere y se asimila tras largos años de escucha obsesiva por los clásicos y de ideas preclaras que materializar en escena. De horas invertidas, por una causa noble, en figuras como John Coltrane, Charlie Mingus, Charlie Parker, los Soul Vendors o Lyn Taitt & The Jets. En sellos como Blue Note, Atlantic, Studio One o Treasure Isle.

En definitiva, una apuesta segura de la factoría Brixton Records-Silver Bullets: 14 temas con vocación de baile, para encarar la vida con una filosofía distinta, con positivismo y afán de escarbar, con las zarpas de un gato, en lo más profundo. Como un rastreador de las raíces jamaicanas en busca de su esencia misma para atraérsela al terreno del jazz o como un adolescente enamorado que bebe los vientos por una chavala del uptown, que bien puede llamarse Laila o Mary Ann.

Those lads that in 2001 with more enthusiasm than skill with their instruments started doing music in the Horta-Guinardo district of Barcelona under the name of The Short Skankers are today ROOT DIAMOONS. A consolidated experienced and awarded project that collects the legacy of traditional ska, rocksteady and genuine ska-jazz from the Jamaican geniuses of the 60’s -meaning Jackie Opel, The Skatalites or Justin Hinds & The Dominoes- with the same fondness with which they listen to the American revivalists of the 90’s such as Hepcat, The Articles, Jump With Joey and The Slackers.

Elegance is owned or not . It is not enough to show off in a just bought Armani suit or to emulate the pioneers in a futile attempt. Style written in capital letters cannot be pretended, it is acquired and assimilated after long years of obsessive listening to the classics and embodying crystal clear ideas on stage. Hundreds of hours spent in a noble cause with giants like John Coltrane, Charlie Mingus, Charlie Parker, the Soul Vendors and Lyn Taitt & The Jets. With record labels like Blue Note, Atlantic, Studio One and Treasure Isle.

Definitively a sure bet from the Brixton Records-Silver Bullets factory: 14 tracks with dance floor vocation that help us to face life with an upbeat attitude. As if raiders in search of the very essence of Jamaican roots and bringing it to the jazz side or as teenagers in love with an uptown girl whose name might be Laila or Mary Ann.
